Virtual tour of renewable energy sources

On May 6, 2026, 2nd EE students participated in an online learning and virtual tour of renewable energy sources with CEZ Group. During the program, they learned about the basic principles of electricity production and how electricity travels from the power plant to the socket and how it is used in the home.

Through apps, models, videos and photos, they got a glimpse into the power plant, substation and other parts of the distribution system. They focused mainly on renewable energy sources - water, wind and solar. Pupils were reminded that in hydroelectric power plants, water turns a turbine, which drives a generator, which produces electricity. In the case of wind turbines, they learned about the main parts - the mast, the nacelle and the rotor with the blades. They also learnt that photovoltaic panels produce electricity through sunlight and work even when the sky is cloudy.

The programme also included interesting facts from the energy sector. For example, pupils learned that the largest hydroelectric power plant in the Czech Republic is Orlík, that a typical wind power plant in the Czech Republic measures approximately 80-100 metres and that the first floating photovoltaic power plant in the Czech Republic is located on the upper reservoir of the pumping hydroelectric power plant in Štěchovice.

Throughout the lesson, students had the opportunity to ask questions and actively participate. At the end, they tested their knowledge in a competition. The virtual field trip was an interesting addition to the lesson and helped the pupils to better understand the important role of renewable energy sources in today's world.
