Pedagogical shadowing in Spain: inspiration for technical education

In the week of 13-17 April 2026 our teacher of vocational subjects Ing. Bc. Lukáš Franta, Ph. D., participated in a pedagogical shadowing at the partner school Institució Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. This international mobility provided valuable insights into the organisation of technical education, teaching methods and the use of modern technologies across different levels of study.

During the week it was possible to observe teaching in specialist classrooms, machine workshops and computer laboratories. The school places great emphasis on practical skills, independent thinking and long-term project-based learning. Students work with conventional and CNC machine tools, use 3D printers for rapid prototyping and learn about laser cutting as a natural complement to modern manufacturing. The projects students work on often combine mechanical design, automation and programming.

Part of the shadowing was also teaching automation and control of technical systems, where students solved control tasks of pneumatic and hydraulic mechanisms in simulation software. In the upper years, attention was paid to programming CNC machines in structured text as well as production preparation in CAM systems, specifically in the Mastercam environment. Teaching was conducted systematically, with emphasis on understanding the principles, not just mechanical mastery of the software. Also very inspiring was the presentation of student work focused on the use of artificial intelligence - from technical applications to data analysis and creative projects.

The pedagogical shadowing confirmed the importance of international cooperation in the field of vocational education and brought a number of suggestions useful for further development of teaching at SPŠ SE České Budějovice, especially in the field of linking theory, simulation and real production.
