Robots@FSI competition - national final with the participation of our students (26 January 2024)

On Friday, 26 January 2024, our school team went to the national final of the Robots@FSI competition hosted by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Brno University of Technology.

The team consisting of Jáchym Cirhan, Martin Felenda, Matěj Kopeček and Jan Jacob Steringa (class 3.EA) advanced to the national finals based on the previous elimination round, when the team of students had to create a program for orientation and vehicle activity in a defined space within the time limit.

The task of each team was to build a vehicle that would place as many dominoes as possible - one by one - on their smallest edge in the designated sector of the playing field within the time limit.

The square playing area was divided into four sectors and each team was assigned one randomly assigned sector in one of the four rounds. There was a time of 2 minutes to build dominoes. At the same time, it was possible to move to an adjacent sector and roll the opponent's dice there. A point was awarded for each opponent's cube built and rolled.

Our team built the vehicle and managed to partially test it. But then a chain of problems hit us. First, the batteries powering the vehicle and its control unit with the stored program died. New batteries were not immediately available and the vehicle control program was deleted. Then again, the program could not be loaded immediately because the assigned computer downloaded the updates it was installing and then rebooted.

So we went into the first round without a control program. In the second and third round our solution was already functional. At the same time, the program was modified in the process - one team took advantage of an ambiguity in the rules and focused only on defeating the opponents' dice and their vehicles, without trying to build their own dice. Therefore, we modified the program so that our vehicle defends the dominoes built with its body in the last round. This proved fully successful, but the loss from the first round could not be made up.

The team of the school finally took a beautiful 4th place.

In addition to interesting material prizes, which they received from the hands of the Dean of the FSI, the students also received one very useful intangible prize - if they are interested in studying at the FSI, they will be admitted to study without an entrance exam.
