Class 2.EE took part in a professional excursion to the small hydroelectric power plant Sokolský ostrov, located in the centre of České Budějovice on the right bank of the Vltava River, near the confluence with the Malší River. The power plant is also an important technical monument of the city, visible for example from the Dlouhé Bridge.

During the excursion, students had the opportunity to see the real operation of power generation. They got acquainted with the technology and operation of the power plant, including its connection to the distribution system.
As part of the tour they saw:

  • synchronous generators,
  • turbines,
  • control technology switchboards,
  • low and high voltage substations.

The plant uses a gradient of approximately 5.1 metres and has an installed capacity of 1 290 kW. It is equipped with three Kaplan turbines and is operated year-round in unmanned mode with regular supervision.
The excursion was particularly beneficial for the students because they could connect the theoretical knowledge from the lessons with a concrete technical solution in practice and better understand the functioning of hydropower plants in a real environment.
