3EA at Kočín substation

On 22 November 2019, as part of the Electrical Equipment course, the 3rd EA class took an excursion to the Kočín substation near JETE.

The 420 kV Kočín substation represents an important node of the Czech transmission system, which ensures reliable power output from the Temelín nuclear power plant to the 400 kV network.

Students learned about the function and importance of the monopoly operator and regulator of our high-voltage power grid - the company ČEPS a.s. Subsequently, they were acquainted with the method of ensuring the uninterruptibility of power supply in the form of the distribution of power circuits according to importance and viewed the substation of own consumption and the control room.

It was enriching to communicate with the dispatchers, who explained what their responsible job entails. They also talked, for example, about the basics of handling at the substation. Here, the students demonstrated their acquired theoretical knowledge as they were tested by the dispatchers on their knowledge of electrical equipment such as switches, disconnectors, Petrsen chokes and current and voltage measuring transformers. The students were not thrown off by the trick question when the staff asked them if there could be a reactor in the substation - here it was correctly recognised with a laugh that it was a huge coil. Finally, the students were able to see the magnitude of the transmitted power by ear and admire the majesty of the 400kV substation with their own eyes as they walked around the substation.
