The 10th edition of the I Know Why physics competition is now underway. The competition is aimed at primary and secondary school pupils. Participants are asked to make a video in which they explain a physical phenomenon or law. They don't need any special equipment: physics is all around us, so they can get by with items found in every household, garage or garden. The video is not only designed to educate, but also to entertain and amuse.
As in previous years, the winners of the main categories (primary school and secondary school) will receive 200,000 crowns for their school in addition to valuable shopping vouchers. The money can be used to purchase teaching aids and equipment or to refurbish classrooms. The funding is provided by the ČEZ Foundation.
This year's edition of "I Know Why" again offers additional competition categories. All-girl teams automatically compete for an extra fun Physics Show for their entire class from the Údif (or Amazing Physics Theatre) troupe. After all, last year the girls literally dominated the competition: although they made up less than half of the participants (42 %), they took five of the six medal positions, including the grand prize.
Those who decide to film an experiment using renewable energy sources (sun, water, wind) or an experiment related to nuclear energy can get a power bank with a solar panel. The authors of the video that receives the most votes from the public will receive a package of stylish gift items.
The contestants have a few months to think, prepare and shoot. Short videos of the experiments can be uploaded to the website www.vimproc.cz insert up to 15 May. At the same address you can also find a collection of all videos from previous years. They can serve not only as inspiration for students to create their own work, but also as interesting teaching material for teachers. The competition will be judged in June.
