Lectures Myths and Facts about the EU for 4.SA and 4.SB - 1 and 18 November 2024

On November 1 and 18, 2024, two lectures about the European Union were held for classes 4.SA and 4.SB by PhDr. Kateřina Marková, regional coordinator of information activities about the European Union from Eurocenter České Budějovice.

The lectures Myths and Facts about the EU had a similar content and took place in the framework of the ZSV lessons. PhDr. Kateřina Marková first briefly introduced the activities of the Eurocentre České Budějovice and explained what pupils could find on the Eurodesk.cz website. She then gave a brief summary of the composition of the European Union and also reminded them that the Czech Republic has been a member of the EU for 20 years. She also defined terms related to the phases of economic integration.

Part of the lecture was devoted to the myths that circulate around the EU, such as the regulation of the shape of bananas, cucumbers, regulation for hairdressers, etc. In this context, the lecturer explained to the students, among other things, why spreadable butter or rum was banned and how it was actually the case with the ban on Czech "killing machines". The students also learned about the influence of the Czech Republic in EU decision-making, which came as a big surprise to many.

At the end, the students were informed about the so-called youth exchanges, which they can also participate in if they are interested until they turn 30. More information on this type of activity is also available on the Eurodesk.cz website (Erasmus+ Youth - Youth Exchanges).
