The excursion started at the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant information centre at 9 am. The students were informed about safety regulations and procedures for visiting the power plant, and therefore, for example, they had to leave their mobile phones in the information centre and put on reflective vests and helmets.
We then moved to the entrance of the power plant where everyone was checked and allowed through the security turnstile. The class, divided into 3 groups for security reasons, then walked through the plant grounds to the secondary circuit section where the turbines are located. These turbines are spun by steam heated to 320 °C and convert this rotational motion into a generator which generates an electric current.
We then moved through the complex past the transformer stations to the iconic cooling towers. The students also had the opportunity to see the training control room where operators rehearse catastrophic reactor or turbine failure scenarios and learn how to solve them.
After returning to the information centre, the class was also treated to a virtual reality tour of the power plant. Thanks to this demonstration, the students were able to get into inaccessible places, such as the nuclear reactor, the spent fuel storage or the cooling tower.
