Open Day at the University of Technology in Pilsen (30 January 2024)

On 30 January 2024, the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen organized an Open Day, to which it invited students of our school. The event was attended by all 4th graders, bus transport was provided by ZČU.

The DOD at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of ZČU was very well prepared. Right in the lobby there was all the necessary information in both paper and electronic form (available with the help of a mobile phone). At the same time there were many guides ready to help or show everything the school has to offer.

On each floor of the building (one below ground level and 7 above ground) very interesting demonstrations were prepared in laboratories and study rooms. Those who started with the basement did not regret it. In fact, reverberation chambers without reverberation or reverberation chambers with reverberation, which could be physically tested, are not quite common. The same was true on all the other floors. And it wasn't just about electronics or power engineering. We had the opportunity to see a number of other interesting things, for example:

  • 5 phase motor,
  • an electric heat laboratory, where it was possible to see first-hand the melting of aluminium using an induction furnace operating at 250 A at 250 kHz using an inverter cooled by distilled water,
  • laboratory with 4 industrial robots,
  • oxygen-hydrogen fuel cells in another lab.

Perhaps the biggest surprise for most of us was the lab, which demonstrated the production of garments that have electronic components integrated into them for a variety of purposes. Different types of conductive threads or ribbons, mainly home-made, are used here with a number of special machines, but also with a conventional sewing machine to help produce, for example, heated sweatshirts. These are then tested not only by wearing them, but also by washing and drying them in a laboratory with a washing machine and dryer installed.

Those who made it to the 6th or 7th floor did not regret it either. The microwave technology and radio technology demonstrated here was worth the stairs (or the elevator) - it showed us the now commonplace of monitoring our own CubeSatZUC (micro-rail) and many other things. It also included a top-notch interpretation.

Those who participated in the DOD at the FELU ZČU in Pilsen certainly have a lot to think about (what field to study after graduation).

On Tuesday 30 January 2023, all graduating classes visited the Open Day at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. In relation to our current field of study, we visited the relevant faculty (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering or Faculty of Electrical Engineering). Our class 4.SA therefore visited the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, where we had several smaller lectures on different topics (according to the focus of the department). We found out all the important information regarding the study options and the school year schedule. Everyone was interested in the technical equipment of each department and the theoretical knowledge of the teachers who teach there. We were most grateful for the opinions of our guide, who was a student of the faculty and always added his honest opinion to his explanations and introduced us to the process of the faculty as a whole.

The Open Day showed us several important aspects of studying at ZČU and certainly many of us will think about future studies at this university.
