Discussion on small modular reactors with a representative of CEZ Group

On Wednesday 28 January 2026, students from partner secondary schools and grammar schools from České Budějovice attended a professional discussion with Ing. Jan Hejný, head of the SMR technician department at CEZ Group. The topic of the meeting was small modular reactors (SMR) - a modern technology that is currently considered one of the most promising paths for the future of energy.

The lecture took place in the auditorium SPŠSE, Dukelská 13. The capacity of the hall of almost 110 seats was filled by students from several schools - apart from the SE Secondary School, also from the Jírovcova Gymnasium, the J. V. Jirsík Gymnasium and the Česká Gymnasium in České Budějovice.

Ing. Hejný introduced the principles, advantages and possible future use of small modular reactors in the Czech Republic. SMRs are a compact type of nuclear reactors that mass-produced in factories and are delivered to the site as finished modules. They stand out:

  • less power (up to 300 MW per reactor),
  • modular design, allowing for faster construction,
  • a higher level of security thanks to passive security systems,
  • Flexibility - can be used individually or stacked into larger units.

The lecture provided students not only with an overview of this modern energy technology, but also with an insight into the practice of CEZ Group experts. The meeting aroused great interest and brought an inspiring discussion about the future of the Czech energy sector and the possibilities of employment in technical fields.
